Dubai will stage a 10-meeting international horse racing carnival next year featuring the richest race in the world, it was announced on Sunday.

The tiny, yet wealthy Gulf emirate will splash $21 million on the two-month-long Dubai International Racing carnival, including the $15.25 million Dubai World Cup in March, Emirates Racing Association racing director Fin Powrie said.

The Dubai World Cup, which includes five Group One and two Group Two races, will headline the planned carnival, at the Nad Al Sheba racecourse.

Of the 55 races to be staged during the carnival, 16 will be run at either Group or Listed level, 20 will be on turf, and the rest on dirt, Powrie said.

Powrie, from Australia, said Sheikh Mohamad bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Dubai's crown prince and head of the world champion Godolphin racing team, wanted to introduce the carnival to capitalize on the success of the Dubai World Cup meet.

The Dubai Racing Club will cover the expenses of transporting horses to and from Dubai. Overseas trainers will have access to state-of-the-art facilities at the stables in Dubai for free. Also, overseas trainers will be eligible for a $50,000 prize based on the number of wins in the carnival.
